Some background information (based on the National Historical Institute marker, translated again, by me… from Pilipino): Established by Jesuit priests as “visita” of Baclayon; became a parish in 1697 with the Our Lady of the Assumption as patroness. In 1768 the church was administered by Recollect priests. The current church structure was first constructed under Fr. Julio Saldaña, O.A.R. from 1863 to 1879. Construction resumed under Fr. Natalio Del Mar from 1919 to 1923. The paintings inside the church were done by Ray Franca and Canuto Avila. It was inaugurated by Monsignor Juan Gorordo of Cebu on August 23, 1923. Elevated as Shrine of Our Lady of Assumption on August 15, 2004. It was a unique combination of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Classical architectural styles. The church was declared a National Historical Site in 2009.
